Workshop VII:  Number Talks:  Bringing the Standards for Mathematical Practice to life through the mathematics of patterns and algebraic thinking for teachers grades P-12

Funded by SKC’s Department of Mathematics Education  and Math Science Partnership.  Facilitated by MEC co-founders Ruth Parker and Patty Lofgren.

Co-founder and former CEO of the Mathematics Education Collaborative, Ruth Parker is a leading expert in working with parents and the public in support of quality mathematics education in schools. As a new teacher in 1971 on the Makah Indian Reservation in Neah Bay, Washington, Ruth was part of a federally-funded project to develop a model school for Native American children, and remains deeply committed to eliminating opportunity gaps for historically underrepresented populations.

Patty Lofgren is recognized nationally as an expert teacher and professional development leader. She was a 1992 recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching. Patty spent 21 years as a K-8 classroom teacher, dedicated to offering powerful mathematics to her students. In addition, she served in a variety of leadership and staff development capacities at the local, state and national levels and is widely recognized for her work in the area of mathematics performance assessment.

Bringing the Standards for Mathematical Practice to Life in Grades 3-12 Classrooms

Whether teachers have tried Number Talks with their students before, or are new to Number Talks, this 2-day institute will help them learn how to make Number Talks a vibrant and essential part of their everyday classroom practice.

Participants will:

  • Receive a copy of the book Making Number Talks Matter.
  • Experience a learning environment that embodies the Common Core State Standards for Mathematical Practice.
  • Learn ways to provide both support for struggling learners and challenges for confident learners without labeling or grouping students.
