2017 Summer Workshop

Implementing the Standards for Mathematical Practice

August 14 – 18, 2017 (5-day workshop)

Salish Kootenai College, Pablo, MT

Workshop IV:  Probability: A Study of Chance:  Bringing the Standards for Mathematical Practice to life through the mathematics of probability for teachers grades 4-14

Presented by Patty Lofgren of the Mathematics Education Collaborative

Participants will deepen their own mathematical understandings of a range of mathematical ideas, including:

  • theoretical and experimental probability
  • diverse models for determining probability (for example: area models, tree diagrams, organized lists, matrices)
  • events, possible outcomes, defining and constructing sample space
  • Law of Large Numbers
  • computation and interpretation of expected value in simple cases
  • inductive and deductive reasoning
  • mathematically convincing arguments

Work with other K-20 teachers of mathematics to solve challenging and engaging problems both collaboratively and as independent problem solvers. Engage with colleagues in professional discussions of mathematics, instructional practice, and other relevant issues.
