2018 Summer Workshop

Implementing the Standards for Mathematical Practice

August 13 – 17, 2018 (5-day workshop)

Salish Kootenai College, Pablo, MT

Registration Deadline: June 1st, 2018

Workshop VI:  Patterns and Algebraic Thinking:  Bringing the Standards for Mathematical Practice to life through the mathematics of patterns and algebraic thinking for teachers grades 4-14

Presented by SKC’s Department of Mathematics Education under the leadership of Terry Souhrada and Jamie Souhrada

Participants will deepen their own mathematical understandings of a range of mathematical ideas, including:

  • Generalization of patterns that have proven their mathematical power and significance
  • Explore linear, quadratic and exponential functions
  • Build relationships among the various representations of a function-graphical, numerical, geometric, algebraic and verb/situational
  • Simplify equations and expressions
  • Use multiple ways to solve a mathematical problem
  • Become successful problem solvers and use mathematics for making sense of situations
  • Learn what it means to have a productive mathematical disposition

Work with other K-20 teachers of mathematics to solve challenging and engaging problems both collaboratively and as independent problem solvers. Engage with colleagues in professional discussions of mathematics, instructional practice, and other relevant issues.
